Given its Mediterranean location and its rich and diverse historical heritage, Cyprus
is a land of incredible beauty and great contrasts. It combines the very latest
in technology and the modern world, with historical landmarks and traditions that
are noticeably present throughout the island. It is therefore not surprising that
it attracts around 3 million tourists a year, who come to enjoy the famous Cypriot
hospitality, sandy beaches, beautiful mountains, archaeological sites, sports and
cultural activities.

Cyprus the third largest island of the Mediterranean, extending 62 miles from north
to south and 149 miles from east to west. Situated in the east end of the Mediterranean,
it provides a strategic gateway to Europe, Africa and Asia.

Greek and Turkish are the official languages, although English is widely spoken
throughout Cyprus.
Cyprus is an Independent Democratic Republic. The President of the Republic is the
head of state. He is elected for a five-year term. The Council of Ministers is appointed
by the President and constitutes the executive organ of the Republic. The legislative
power is held by the House of Representatives whose members are elected for a five-year
period. Cyprus is a member of the United Nations, and its agencies, the Council
of Europe and the Commonwealth. As of May 1st 2004, Cyprus will also be a full EU
member state.
Cyprus has a highly advanced telecommunications system. The Cyprus Telecommunications
Authority (CYTA), boasts a virtually all-digital local network, a satellite telecommunications
network and a fibre optic submarine cable system that links Cyprus with the rest
of the world. CYTA also provides a variety of advanced telecommunications services,
covering the whole spectrum of customer needs for both voice and data communications,
both fixed and mobile.
There are two multipurpose ports in Cyprus. The main port is located in Lemesos
(Limassol) and the other in Larnaka (Larnaca).
The Cyprus legal system is based on British Common Law.
The local Currency is the Cyprus Pound. 1 Cyprus Pound consists of 100 Cents. Bank

Cyprus has two International airports, the largest of which is located in Larnaka
(Larnaca) and the other in Pafos.
Cyprus ranks high in education. It has one university and 34 colleges and institutions
of further education. More than 70% of secondary school leavers continue on third
level education and more than half continue their studies abroad.
